What are Bed Bugs and why are they bad?
Bedbugs (or bed bugs) are small, elusive, and parasitic insects of the family Cimicidae. They live strictly by feeding on the blood of humans and other warm-blooded animals. Bedbugs occur around the world. Because infestation of human habitats has been on the increase in developed countries, bedbug bites and related conditions have been on the rise as well, since the 1980s-1990s. The exact causes of this resurgence remain unclear; it is variously ascribed to greater foreign travel, more frequent exchange of second-hand furnishings among homes, a greater focus on control of other pests resulting in neglect of bedbug countermeasures, and increasing resistance to pesticides. Bedbugs have been known human parasites for thousands of years.
Public health issues. Although bed bugs bite people and feed on human blood they have not been found to transmit any diseases to humans. However, secondary infections resulting from scratching bites can occur and should be cleaned and treated accordingly. Repeat exposure to bed bug bites may cause some people to become sensitized to the saliva and result in mild to intense allergic reactions. Serious infestations and chronic attacks can cause anxiety, stress, and insomnia. Development of refractory delusional parasitosis is possible, as a person develops an overwhelming obsession with bedbugs
Cost of Extermination. When all of the factors are taken into consideration, the extermination can cost as much as $50,000 for a large hotel or building. The cost to treat apartments and homes can vary greatly depending on the size and location of the infestation. Typically pest control companies charge by the room for bed bugs and the cost is normaly around 400-500 per room with a discount given for several rooms. this cost will include all furnishings and wall decorations as well as all places and items that bed bugs would hide. Even after a thorough extermination, some bed bugs may remain, and quarantining a room is pointless, as the bed bugs can live for an entire year without a blood feeding. This means multiple exterminations may need to occur before the infestation is completely eradicated, and in buildings with lots intermittent visitors, such as hotels, the infestation can return very easily, as the bed bugs can transfer from articles of clothing and other personal belongings. This adds to the woes of countless hotel, motel, inn, and lodging owners.

Some basic training
What to look for.You can detect bedbugs bug looking for black tracks on your bedding and mattress. These tracks are actually fecal stains that bedbugs leave when they move. Because bedbugs feed on human blood, their feces is pretty much nothing more than dried blood. Sometimes while a bedbug is feeding you will move or turn over. If the feeding bedbug is crushed when you move, it will leave small blood stains on whatever they are squished against. Obviously, bedbug fecal stains and blood stains show up best on lighter colored bedding. Bedbugs tend to come out later at night as they feed closer to dawn so chances are you won't see bedbugs during the day unless you have a very bad infestation.

What do bed bugs look like? Bed Bugs are oval in shape and have a flat body structure, which enables them to nest in small cracks and crevices. They are about 1/4” in length and are similar in appearance to a tick. When bed bugs first hatch, they are nearly transparent and about the size of a poppy seed Upon feeding a bed bug’s nearly transparent appearance initially changes to medium brown similar to the color of cockroaches and can
gradually progress to a purplish-red color.

How fast do they spread. Some research has supported the fact that bed bugs can lay close to 500 eggs in their lifetime, and five eggs per day. One can easily see these eggs faster than they would see the bed bugs as they are of milky-white in color and are 1mm in length. Taking close to two weeks to hatch, these new bed bugs, or nymphs, begin their feeding process right away.

Where do bed bugs hide? Inspection efforts should concentrate on the mattress, box springs, and bed frame. As well as cracks and crevice in all furniture. You should also check all window and door frames, floor cracks, carpet tack boards, baseboards, electrical boxes, furniture, pictures, wall hangings, drapery pleats, loosened wallpaper, any cracks in the walls or floor.
